What is a single dental implant?

Often, the ideal permanent tooth replacement is to use a dental implant to replace the root of the tooth. This solution both looks and functions just like a natural tooth.

In this case, a dental implant, which resembles a small screw, replaces the root of the tooth. A small connector is placed onto the top of the implant and a crown is fixed in place. This option gives:

Treatment procedure

Step 1 – Before procedure:

After initial consultation an appointment is usually arranged to gather information such as x-rays and study models to give a picture of the areas where implants may be placed. A treatment plan can then be created to provide patients with one or more options for treatment. Patients will then have the opportunity to discuss these options with the treatment coordinator and will be able to make informed decisions about their treatment.

Step 2 – Placing the implant:

The implant is placed. At this time, a temporary tooth is provided that allows you to eat and function like normal almost immediately. The implant will need a few months to integrate with the jawbone before the next step is taken.

Step 3 – Attaching the new crown:

The final step of the procedure is the placement of a permanent ceramic crown, which is placed onto the implant components.

Step 4 – End result:

You should expect the new tooth to fit and function just like a natural tooth. You will now need to follow your usual dental hygiene routine to keep the tooth and gum clean and healthy.
